You found a product with demand and a reliable supplier, then Seller Central shows a padlock: "You need approval to list in this category." Gating is how Amazon controls who can sell in categories and brands where quality, safety or counterfeits are a concern. It is not a penalty, but it does stop you listing until you are approved.
KM Automations and Services helps sellers with Amazon category and brand ungating. As part of our store and category approval work, we help with approvals for gated or restricted categories, so you can list the products you want to sell.
What gating is and why Amazon uses it
Amazon requires approval for some categories, subcategories, brands and individual products. The aim is to protect buyers from unsafe or counterfeit goods and to protect brand owners. To get approved, sellers may need to show that their products come from a legitimate supply chain, meet safety or compliance requirements, or that the account meets certain performance standards.
Gating changes over time. A category that was open last year might be restricted now, and new products can be gated without notice. Checking before you buy inventory is the cheapest way to avoid problems.
Commonly gated categories
The exact list changes and depends on the specific product, but categories that have commonly required approval include:
- Grocery and gourmet food
- Some beauty, topical and personal care products
- Jewelry and watches
- Collectibles, such as collectible coins and entertainment collectibles
- Certain automotive and powersports parts
- Some health, medical and dietary supplement products
To check a specific item, search for it in Seller Central's Add a Product tool. If approval is needed, you will see a prompt to request it.
Product vs. category vs. brand approval
- Category approval lets you list across a gated category or subcategory, subject to any brand restrictions inside it.
- Brand approval lets you sell a specific restricted brand. Some brands require authorization from the brand owner.
- Product (ASIN) approval applies to an individual listing, for example a hazmat or safety-related item that needs extra documents.
Knowing which one you need matters, because the documents differ. A category approval does not automatically include every brand in that category.
What a qualifying invoice looks like
For many applications, the invoice is the most important document. Amazon generally looks for an invoice that:
- Comes from a manufacturer or authorized distributor, not a retail store.
- Is recent, within the window Amazon states in the application.
- Shows the supplier's name and contact details, which Amazon may verify.
- Shows your business name and address matching your seller account.
- Lists the products and the quantities you purchased.
Requirements vary by category and are stated in each application, so read them before you submit. Editing or creating invoices is a policy violation and can lead to suspension; if you have received a notice like that, see our suspension and reinstatement service.
Our ungating process
- Book a call. Tell us which products, brands or categories you want to sell.
- Check requirements. We confirm which type of approval each item needs and what Amazon asks for.
- Prepare documents. We review your invoices and supporting documents for gaps and mismatches.
- Application. We help you submit a complete application for each approval.
- Follow-up. If Amazon denies the request or asks for more information, we review the response and help you address it.
Amazon decides every approval, and some brands can only be sold with the brand owner's authorization. We don't promise approvals; we help you submit the strongest application your documents support.
New account? Make sure your seller account approval and verification are complete first. Once you are approved and listing, our ecommerce store management services keep listings and account health on track, and our store management guide explains how to check that categories are approved as part of a routine.
Frequently asked questions
What is Amazon ungating?
Ungating is getting Amazon's approval to sell in a category, brand or product that is restricted. Until you are approved, you can't create offers for those items, even if your account is otherwise in good standing.
Which Amazon categories are gated?
Amazon restricts a changing list of categories and subcategories. Examples have included grocery and gourmet food, some beauty and topical products, jewelry, watches, collectibles and certain automotive items. Check the Add a Product tool in Seller Central for the current status of each item.
What invoices does Amazon accept for ungating?
Amazon generally looks for recent invoices from a manufacturer or authorized distributor that show the supplier's and your business details matching your account, the products and quantities purchased. Retail receipts are usually not accepted. Exact requirements vary by category and are shown in the application.
Can you ungate any brand?
No. Some brand owners restrict who can sell their products, and Amazon may only approve sellers with authorization from the brand. We help you prepare the strongest application your documents support, but we can't create authorization you don't have.
What if my ungating request is denied?
Read the reason Amazon gives. Often the fix is a better invoice, a document that matches your account details, or meeting a performance requirement first. You can usually apply again once that is addressed.
